Twittering Your Business

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Social networking sites can be a great way to extend you reach to your customers, as long as it isn’t overdone. More contact is great, and can be used to your marketing advantage, but balance it so you don’t seem chatty like high school. You want to reach your customers, but still look professional.

Twitter

Unless you have been living under a rock the last six months or so, you have all heard about the latest tech craze, Twitter. Twitter is similar to a live chat session with the world. The only limitation to your messages is the length of them (140 characters). This was put in place to cover users who choose to get their feeds from twitter on their cell phones. SMS messages are limited to 168 characters, and they wanted to allow enough room for the username.

OK, But What Good Is It For My Business?

Think of it as a free marketing campaign. A lot of companies are using it to extend and solidify their brand. Even the Dave Ramsey Show uses it to take questions from listeners and to use it to extend their marketing reach. An author recently used it to give his fans a chance to preview and critique a new short story before he released it because he wasn’t sure it worked as it stood, so he let them be his editors and incorporated most of their suggested changes.

Here is another thought. Let’s say that you are considering changes to a product, like adding the shirt in blue as well as the normal red, or moving the handle on another product to make it easier to control. You could twitter those proposed changes to your customers to get their feedback. Maybe they like the changes, or maybe they hate blue but would really like gray. Maybe they think the handle change would be better somewhere else, or maybe they like it where it is. That would be nice to know before you buy a gross of blue shirts or retool your equipment to change the way your tool is built. In the typical way of interacting with customers, you wouldn’t find out that was a bad idea until you are putting those blue shirts on the shelf at a 75% discount to get them out of your back room.

You can also use this tool to solicit information from your customers. Maybe ask them what they would like to see. Is there a product or service they wish you offered? Most people won’t say, “I wish you carried ‘x’,” unless you ask them. Most people also won’t make unsolicited advice on how to improve you products.

Another great use is insider offers. That will really get people interested in checking out the feed. At random intervals, log on and give your users a code to get a special discount on your products, or maybe on a special service or product you don’t normally offer. Used in moderation, this can be a great way to get a good following and bring more customers inside your “virtual office.”

Web Analytics for Your Website

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Before we begin, what are Web Analytics? At its simplest level, it is data that tells you how people use your Web site, and what areas work best. You will be able to gather information on where your traffic is coming from, how many people visit daily, and what they do after they get to your Website.

If you want advanced functionality, the Google Analytics tool is the best by far. However, as you first begin to use analytics, the following tools can function nicely for your needs. In many cases, you won’t need anything more complicated that these tools offer.

What Do We Get From Web Analytics?

At its most basic level, we are trying to answer the following questions:

  • How many visitors come to the site?
  • What do they do when they get here?
  • What pages are they viewing?
  • How long do they stay on your Website?
  • Where did they link to your site from?

AWStats

This is a good tool that is available with all of our hosting accounts, in either your SiteWorx control panel (InterWorx web hosting packages) or your cPanel control panel (cPanel web  hosting packages). This tool will allow you to see where the traffic on your site is coming from. It allows you to see how you are seen on the Internet. You will see high-level information about your Website. This gives you real-time information with colorful, easy-to-read graphs.

TraceWatch

TraceWatch give you tools that are usually only available in enterprise class programs. You will see real-time statistics and traffic analysis. This program provides an extensive array of reports, path analysis, graphs, charts, and detailed information about your visitors. It will even provide multi-site and multi-language information.

Woopra

Woopra is a Java-based Website analytics tool. A feature that sets this tool apart from others is a “ticker tape” displaying your Website statistics running along the bottom of the page. You will be able to see when visitors get to your site, as well as view how they travel through your site.

There is also an integrated chat function that will allow you to talk with your customers in real time. In addition to all the useful information in a graphical format, this tool also goes a step further by giving you a dashboard which displays the information at a glance.

Google Analytics

Of all the free tools out there, Google Analytics is by far the most robust and powerful (Google Analytics was previously known as Urchin before Google purchased Urchin in March 2005 for $30,000,000). It includes all of the resources that the other tools, as well as many other capabilities. However, some people do not feel comfortable with a third party having data on their Websites, and feel better managing the data themselves.

Whichever tool that you use is not important. What is important is that you do use a tool (or a combination of these great tools) to manipulate and manage the data. This will help you to create robust Websites that users will come back to again and again. This will also tell you when an area is not working so you can remove or modify that section of your site. For those of you with e-commerce Websites, it can also help you to better manage your catalogs and make the descriptions more appealing.

Here at KARTHOST, we are not successful unless you are, and we will always strive to bring you the tools and resources to make your endeavor more profitable.

Wishing you all the best in your business endeavors.

Common Sense Internet Safety

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Technology has been advancing at breakneck speed, especially in the last twenty years. And that especially goes for the Internet. Because of the Internet any small business has the same chance of marketing to the same people as the mega brick and mortar stores. There are so many ways to market your products, purchase products, communicate with business associates and family, and the list goes on and on. It can seem like a full time job just trying to keep up with technology, let alone trying to protect your business and your family. And, as quickly as technology advances for the rest of us, it advances just as quickly for the “bad guys” as well. Today we will be looking at a few Internet-based technologies, and some common sense ways to keep you and your family safe while getting the most out of all these technologies.

Online Shopping

Often referred to as an e-commerce site, which is a web site that has a shopping cart and can be known as a online store. An Internet e-commerce site is a wonderful time-saving technology that allows both you and your customers to not only save a lot of money by shopping around, but also creates an even playing field for the Mom and Pops to be on Equal footing with the Big Name Box Stores.

However, the Big Box Stores already have an advantage that a Mom and Pop do not have outside of their circle of influence.  And that is “brand recognition” and more importantly, an already established trust that the small business or “Mom and Pop” has to overcome, because the modern online shopper is sophisticated and you will lose a sale (aka shopping cart abandonment) if you haven’t built that trust and relationship with your customer, you are not going to get the sale.

Here is a short list of items every current online store owner or prospective online store owner should plan into the development of their store, and things that those are looking to buy should look for when purchasing from an online business:

  1. Investigate the Domain Name of the store you are visiting. Make sure that the name on the Domain Name Record (which is public) matches the name of the business you are doing business with. A “Warning Flag” is the use of “Privacy Protection, in other words a Proxy is being used to HIDE the real owner of the domain name. Your question should be what are they trying to hide?  While there are legitimate reasons to use Privacy Protection (Proxy) to hide the owners contact information for private web sites, for a business this should never be used, unless there is a unique reason.
  2. Look for third party accreditations on the site, like but not limited to the Better Business Bureau, McAfee SiteAdvisor, Seals from Trust Guard are just a few. Make sure to click on the seals to help verify the company you are really doing business with. KARTHOST.com has a point and verify seal from COMODO a leader in the internet security business, if you go to any page on the KARTHOST.com web site and mouse over the VISA, MasterCard, Discover Card logos you will see a seal will appear with verification. So make sure your site has these linkable seals on YOUR site. And as a visitor look for these seals.
  3. Make sure that when you check out that the page that is actually collecting your personal information like credit and debit card information is a secure page. There are some simple ways to do this.
    a) Look in your web browser’s address window for the https:// if the web address doesn’t start with that then you are NOT on a secure page. Also make sure that the little “lock” is showing at the bottom of your browser window. The only way to check to make sure that the page you are on is to make right click on the page where there isn’t any graphics. And using IE7 click on Properties and you will see something like this “TLS 1.0, AES with 128 bit encryption (High); RSA with 1024 bit exchange” the 128 bit encryption is proof you are on a secure page. If using Firefox you will right click in a blank area (without graphics) and choose “View Page Info” and then click on the Security icon and then click on the View Certificate button.
    b) Make sure that you’re not rerouted to another unknown web site, unless you are expecting to be rerouted like if paying using a service like 2CheckOut or PayPal where they process your order on behalf of the store owner on their own web sites.
  4. Other things to look for, make sure the ecommerce site has a phone number to call should you have a problem and a real address, something other than an email address or email form on their web site.
  5. Always check the stores return policy and/or Privacy Policy pages.

If you follow these common sense tips while shopping online, whether it be from a Big Box store, or or a well run Mom and Pop store, your experience will be safe and enjoyable. And if you own an online ecommerce store, make sure your store measures up.

Finally, when purchasing online, be careful when ordering items from far eastern vendors, such as China, Thailand, and Singapore. These areas are rampant with piracy and knockoffs, so you may not receive what you expected. That iPhone you just bought may not be an iPhone.

Email

Email is a wonderful tool that I am sure than many of us could not live without. It increases efficiencies, and allows us to communicate almost immediately with anyone all across the globe. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when using email. The most important consideration is to never include information such as a password or account number in an email. Email always communicates in plain text. The easiest thing to keep in mind is that if you would not be comfortable sharing the information with third parties, then it probably should not be in an email. Also, if you do not use the person, or if it has a questionable attachment type, delete the email and do not open it.

If you own a business or if you are trying to develop a “personal brand,” look into getting yourself your own domain name with your name or business name. Instead of promoting Hotmail’s email or Yahoo’s email or Gmail’s email service start promoting your own brand with your own domain. Remember domain names can be used for email as well as using to host your own web site. You can get your own domain name today at KARTHOST.com

Social Networking Sites

This is the latest hot trend. No longer simply the foray of crazy college kids, social networking sites have now become mainstream for everything from marketing campaigns to politics. This can be a very cost effective way to communicate with customers and friends. But, if your family uses these sites for personal items, stress to your children to be very careful with the information they put on these sites. Never post home address and contact phone numbers, and not that posting pictures is a bad thing, in some cases it can be a good thing, but know what your kids are doing before allowing them to post personal photos. In this day and age, bad people often use these kinds of sites to troll for victims.

Social networks like Facebook, Twitter and a few others can be a good thing if used in a positive way to promote you and your service or product. But remember, don’t be too pushy. Social networks are a causal place let your friends and customers get to know you. Once they know you they are more likely to want to do business with you.

Instant Messaging

This is a fast and very efficient way to communicate with customers, vendors, and friends and family. It allows for instant communication and sharing of documents in real time. This can be a real time saver, and is often more efficient than using email, as you can get instant feedback during your communications. However, be careful when your children use this method to communicate with their friends. Make sure you know who they are chatting with, as people are not always who they claim to be.

We certainly don’t want to scare you away from using technology, but rather, to get you to use common sense when using the tools that are available to your business and family.

Wishing you all the best in your business endeavors.

Looking for that Perfect Web Site design software?

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Most all professional web site designers have the God given skills and talent of being able to create and the knowledge of what makes for a very good web site. This should be your first choice when starting a web project. However, if you budget can’t afford it or you have time on your hands you can do this yourself. And like doing any job, having the correct tools to do the job is a essential to doing a great job. This goes for web design software. There have been many programs out there that have come and gone over the years, one of those, for from the best, but very popular is a program called FrontPage. Using Video Effectively On Your Website

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

KARTHOST.com will start adding videos over the next few months to help our customers better understand our services and products and to better communicate with you. We believe that Videos are very important, and you should be adding video to YOUR site as well. And here are some tips/things to think about when YOU start adding video to your site.

Online video is no longer on the fringes of online marketing. It is now as mainstream as simply having a Website. Video on your Website can be used to uniquely set your business apart from others, as well as to provide education to potential customers and employees. Roughly one-third of online retailers currently offer video on their Website, and the number of videos uploaded to the Internet is expected to nearly double by 2013.

Additionally, users are watching more videos than ever, with no projected slowdown in sight. In December 2008 alone, Internet users in the United States watched 14.3 billion online, up 13% over November 2008. The average overall viewing time was 5 hours per user, with the average length of 3.2 minutes per video. Roughly 65% of online videos were viewed during business hours. Additionally, 5% of mobile phone users accessed video on their cell phones.

This all sounds well and good for the retailer, but for every video that is effective and works, probably ten times that number are ineffective at best, and kill sales at worst. The following tips should help you avoid the “video sins” that could cost you sales.

Videos that load slowly will kill any enthusiasm that customers may have for your service. As the Internet speeds have continued to increase, users have become less tolerant for slow Websites. If your videos load slowly, they will simply click away and go to another site, possibly to a competitor’s. Google recently did a study that determined that a loading delay of a half second will cause as much as a 20% drop in traffic.

Do not autoplay your videos. This can cause the page to load more slowly, and it can frustrate your customers. Give them the option of whether or not to play the videos. Videos are useful to garnering new customers, but once they are a customer, they probably don’t want to see the same video again. They are probably simply returning to do additional business. Additionally, only embed one video per page. More than one video per page can cause the pages to load more slowly.

Practice your communication techniques. Non-verbal cues can impact the user experience even more than what you say. Keep your speech pace at an even pace with lively inflections to keep the user engaged and watching. You want to avoid putting them to sleep as much as you do not want to sound like a carnival barker.

Always use a script. “Flying by the seat of your pants” rarely works in video presentations, and it often appears as if you are unprepared. If you do not use a teleprompter, at least use note cards with bullet points to keep you on track.

In closing, don’t be afraid of using video to promote your Website, but take your time and do your homework in order to ensure that the videos work for you and set you apart. Poorly done videos are worse than no videos at all.

Wishing you all the best in your business endeavors.

How To Increase Traffic To Your Website

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

For all of us, putting up a Website is not simply a hobby or something we do for fun. In today’s business environment, who has the time for non-essential activities? Your Website is a tool to generate leads and gain additional revenue for your business. It is a window into who you are, what you do, and how you can help them. There are several things you can do to hurt and help your online efforts.

Things to Avoid

  1. Unprofessional Appearance: Your Website is your image to the world. Remember that when you design your site. This can be your best and worst advertising. If it takes the appearance of a college Facebook page or has an annoying color scheme, people will not take you seriously, no matter how good your products and services are.
  2. Never Changing the Site: If your neighborhood store never changes, always has the same appearance, and never offers any new products, do you eventually stop shopping there and try the competitor with the fresh face and new, intriguing products? Think of your Web site as a store. It is your face to the world. If your let it be bland and boring, you will only encounter one time visitors. Remember: It is a lot harder to get new customers than it is to keep customers.
  3. Being Hard to Contact: In today’s world of email, instant messaging, and cell phones, customers will not tolerate a lack of contact. If you use a “Contact Us” page, expect to lose customers if you don’t respond in 24 hours at the latest. The more technology has moved us along, our patience level has also shrunk. If you haven’t responded in a short period of time, rest assured that your competitor is talking to that customer.

Things to Do

  1. Bring on New Products: Even if you have a lot of products, don’t put them all out at once and never change your site. As stated above, potential customers will get bored and not come back. Instead, put out some of your products, with a message that more are coming soon, and regularly add a few more items. While this may seem like you will lose some potential sales, in reality you will get the customer to keep checking back to see what is new. With all the competition on the Web, the worst thing that can happen is for people to forget about you.
  2. Keep the Site Fresh: This is key to getting your site noticed and to gain traffic. Without changing the content, you will merely continue to drop farther and farther down the search pages. On of the best ways to keep your site fresh and keep potential customers interested and returning is to start a blog on your site. Now, this isn’t merely a blog where you discuss your child’s cute behavior, but rather, a marketing tool. Use it to introduce customers to what you can offer them, what kinds of services you provide, and how it can make their lives better. If you would like a blog on your site but do not have the time or comfort level to do it yourself, please contact us and we will be happy to provide this service for you.

Wishing you all the best in your business endeavors.
